You may be able to find the bad/lousy connection (if it is this), by cranking till the battery runs down, but no more than 30 seconds at a time, and then run your fingers along the cables. Bad connections along with high current = heat generation. Power = Amps (squared) x Resistance. And the engine parts are cold and the oil is cold, that all adds friction, which could slow the cranking rpm somewhat.
